Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point
CommissionedCunningham Field on May 20, 1942, named in honor of the Marine Corps' first aviator, Lieutenant Colonel Alfred A. Cunningham. The completed facility was later renamed Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, after a local post office situated among cherry trees.
MCAS Cherry Point personnel have served our country in many ways from World War II to the present.From the sinking of a German U-boat off the coast of North Carolina in 1943 to supporting and training warriors in today’s missions around the globe, MCAS Cherry Point is the current home of the 2ndMarine Aircraft Wing.Cherry Point’s aircraft have included the A-6 Intruder, EA-6B Prowler, AV-8B Harrier, KC-130 Hercules, RQ-21A Blackjack, F-35B Lightning, F/A-18 Hornet, MV-22B Osprey and numerous others from other military branches who visit Cherry Point.All of these aircraft are supported by the best units in the military, ensuring that the sound of freedom will always be heard around the world.
