Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, AZ
Commissioned MCAS Yuma - Vincent Field on July 20, 1962 after Brigadier General Clinton D. "Casey" Vincent, MCAS Yuma started as a civilian airfield with dirt runways named Fly Field, after Colonel Benjamin Fly, of the Army Air Force.
Dec 15, 1942, in response to World War II, Yuma County Airport became a training facility for the Army Air Force equipped with AT-6 Texans, B-26 Marauders until Nov. 1945. The Air Force activated the air field in 1954 as Yuma Air Force Base with rocket firing F-86D Sabre, F-89C & F-94C Scorpion interceptors, T-33A’s & B-5A’s for towing targets.
When the US Marine Corps inherited Yuma from the Air Force, MCAS Yuma provided year round training for air-to-ground weapons and was home to F-4 Phantom II, F-4B, F-4J, F-4N and F-4S aircraft. The AV-8B Harrier II arrived in the 80’s with MAG-13. MCAS Yuma will remain a primary operations base for the Marine Corps as the F-35 Lightning II takes its place on the tip of the spear.
